Visit to the Sei Boku Bonsai Kai Show

On Saturday, June 13, I had the pleasure of attending the Sei Boku Bonsai Kai (SBBK) annual bonsai show. Held at the picturesque San Mateo Garden Center, it was the perfect way to spend a peaceful morning surrounded by nature, living art, and a fantastic community of enthusiasts.

SBBK's club motto, "Building Community Through the Art of Bonsai," truly shines through in the welcoming atmosphere they cultivate. Here is a quick recap of my time at the show.

Small Scale, Massive Quality

What I loved most about this club's show was its intimacy; this was a beautifully curated exhibition featuring a display of about 35 high-quality trees. The smaller size was a massive benefit. It allowed me to really take my time with each individual display without feeling rushed. I could lean in, study the nebari, admire the wiring and branch structure, and truly appreciate the years of patience and horticultural expertise that went into each specimen.

My Personal Showstoppers

While every tree in the room deserved applause, two specific masterpieces completely stole my attention. Both of these incredible trees belong to the immensely talented Marsha Mekisich, and her eye for detail and styling prowess were on full display.

• The Small, Intricate Cryptomeria: Japanese Cedars are always a treat, but Marsha's small specimen was a masterclass in detail. The foliage was perfectly dense and healthy, and the intricate branch structure gave it the dignified, ancient presence of a giant forest sentinel shrunk down to 24 inches.

• The Shohin Redwood: There is something inherently magical about seeing a California Coast Redwood styled as a shohin. Getting a redwood's foliage to reduce to that scale while maintaining proportion takes immense skill, and Marsha's little tree was a knockout.

Club Sales and Vendors

No bonsai show is complete without a little shopping, and Sei Boku Bonsai Kai did not disappoint. Their club sales section was top-notch and, more importantly, incredibly well-priced. Whether you were looking for raw starter material, refined pre-bonsai, or gently used pots, there were plenty of healthy, affordable options for practitioners of all skill levels. In addition to the club tables, there were several other independent vendors offering specialty tools, beautiful ceramics, and unique companion plants. I ended up purchasing a shohin pot by Max Braverman from the club sales section, and a jasper suiseki and a couple stands from Jerry Braswell.
