Getting Excited for Succulent Bonsai

July 13th General Meeting – Help Us Choose the $5 Raffle Tree

Posted by Bradley Jenks II – Chico Bonsai Society President

Succulents play a valuable role in the art of bonsai, both as supportive accent plants and as striking focal points in their own right. When used as accent plants, succulents like Haworthia, Sedum, or small Aloe varieties provide visual contrast and help evoke a sense of place, enhancing the overall display without distracting from the main tree. Their compact form, unique textures, and drought tolerance make them ideal companions for bonsai, especially in arid-themed compositions. On the other hand, certain succulents—such as Portulacaria afra, Crassula ovata, and some species of Euphorbia—can be trained and styled into full bonsai themselves. With careful pruning and patient design, these plants can develop the structure, taper, and character traditionally valued in bonsai, offering a unique blend of sculpture and resilience.

Portulacaria afra, commonly known as Dwarf Jade, Elephant Bush

Option 1

The tree is planted in a round, low-profile ceramic pot with a clean white glaze and an unglazed rim, giving it a classic look that complements the tree's form without distraction. This tree is a solid starting point for anyone interested in shaping a succulent bonsai over time, with the potential to evolve into a well-balanced and visually striking composition.

Option 2

Option 2 is housed in a tall, handmade stoneware pot with a soft green glaze and subtle ribbing that complements the tree's natural character. The moss-covered soil surface adds to its finished look while still allowing room for future refinement. With its sturdy base and vigorous growth, this tree provides a flexible foundation for shaping and will reward continued care and styling with a bold and mature bonsai form in the years ahead.
