Chico Bonsai Society Seeks a New Secretary

The Chico Bonsai Society would like to extend our sincere thanks to Cindy Smith for her dedication and service as our club secretary.

Cindy has faithfully helped preserve the history of our Society by recording our board discussions, decisions, and meeting minutes. She has also been a clear voice of reason during board discussions, helping us stay organized, thoughtful, and focused on what is best for the club.

Cindy plans to continue as a valued member of the Chico Bonsai Society, but a shift in priorities at home means she needs to step away from her position as secretary. We are grateful for everything she has contributed and look forward to continuing to enjoy her presence in the club.

We Are Looking for Our Next Secretary

The Chico Bonsai Society Board generally meets on the fourth Sunday of each month to plan upcoming club meetings, guest speakers, demonstrations, field trips, workshops, and other activities that support our members and the local bonsai community.

This is a great opportunity for someone who would like to become more involved in the Society.

Beginners are welcome, and extensive bonsai experience is not required.

The secretary should have:

• Basic computer and internet skills

• Familiarity with typing and organizing written information

• A willingness to learn or use Google Drive and Google Docs

• The ability to listen, summarize discussions, and record board decisions

• Dependability and good communication skills

Our board works collaboratively in Google Drive, allowing board members to contribute to shared documents and review meeting minutes together.

Secretary Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities include:

• Attending monthly board meetings

• Taking clear notes during the meeting

• Preparing the official meeting minutes

• Sharing the draft with the board for review

• Posting the approved minutes in the Society’s Google Drive

• Attending occasional special meetings when needed

• Helping maintain an organized record of important club decisions and activities

The work is generally limited to attending the meeting, recording the discussion, and preparing the minutes afterward.

Serving as secretary provides an opportunity to help shape the direction of the Chico Bonsai Society. Board members help develop meeting programs, select guest speakers, organize field trips, plan workshops, and identify new opportunities for our members.

You will also have the opportunity to see club plans develop from the beginning, contribute your ideas before programs are finalized, and help create activities that benefit the entire membership.

This is an especially exciting time to become involved. The Chico Bonsai Society is exploring possibilities for a permanent bonsai garden and gathering location—something that could serve our members and the Chico community for generations.
