BONSAI MEMBER CREATES UNIQUE STAND

I had the pleasure of going to Sal Cordero’s home today to learn about his unique woodworking techniques.   Beginning with straight boards and with a lot of knowledge and coordination, Sal turns these boards magically into Bonsai Tree stands.

Sal used black walnut as the main component in the large Bonsai stand that he designed for Joel Rainey. The inset wood is cherry with the accent being blood wood.  These exotic woods came from various places including Hughes Hardwood here in Chico.

It took Sal approximately six months to complete Joel’s stand. After completion of a stand, Sal applies many layers of tongue oil with drying time in between each application. His shop has the wonderful aroma of the oil wafting through the air.

Sal has completed a somewhat smaller stand to be gifted to a lucky Bonsai Club member.  It is smaller in stature, but done with the same perfection and care as the larger stand.  Some fortunate person will have the opportunity to go home with it after the Opportunity Drawing which will happen at our  general meeting before our Spring Show – April 5-6 2025 at the Chico Fair Grounds. Martin will have the Golden Tickets available at the next meeting. You must be a member too purchase the tickets and the limit is 10 tickets per member.
